188 Miles
SteamboatLake to Edwards, Colorado
After a wonderful breakfast, Jonathan and I spent at least half of an hour washing off the clay that was sticking to every part of our motorcycles. We finally departed the guest ranch around 10 am and rode the paved road towards Steamboat Springs looking for a gas station. After refueling we continued through Steamboat Springs and picked up the Continental Divide route just south of the city. The road was initially good but it soon turned into a rutted jeep road that I didn’t want to deal with. We backtracked and rode down to the south end of Stagecoach Lake where we again picked up the great divided route. We rode this 34 mile gravel stretch at a leisurely pace marveling at the beautiful aspen forests that we encountered.
Our planned route had us crossing Colorado Highway 134 continuing on the gravel road that we were on. However when we reached 134 the sky in front of us was black with heavy rain and flashes of lightning. Not wanting to tempt fate again we decided to take 134 east and pick up US 40 and take it to Kremmling and have lunch. Perhaps the break would give the thunderstorm time to pass and we could continue our route to Kremmling. After lunch we couldn’t help but notice hat the black cloud and lightning was following us so we stayed on US 40 riding rapidly south towards Silverthorn and Interstate 70. We gassed up one more time and then rode the final 42 miles on I-70 to Edwards arriving around 4 pm.
The final leg of our journey was bittersweet. I didn’t want the journey to end but I knew it must. Our great adventure was nearly over. I savored the final miles of the rode like fine wine knowing that Jonathan, in a few weeks, would be leaving us to start his first full time job.
