rv - Rebuilding steering column and ignition switch
I will keep this short. I was camping with the family, parked at our site. I went to start the RV and nothing happened. The starter didn't try to start, there was no return pressure on the ignition key. Thankfully I could still turn the steering wheel and force the shifter into drive. But I had to hot-wire the RV to get it started and get it home.
The problem was somewhere in the steering column. I ordered everything I needed to completely rebuild the steering column. If I was going to take it apart to get all the way down to the ignition switch, I was going to replace everything on the way so I only had to do this once. Ultimately the problem was a broken part replaced in a $20 "ignition switch kit".
This was also a good opportuntiy to replace the steering wheel. I love the old avocado green one, but it was falling apart. I will rebuild it eventually, but for now I installed a old used GMC steering wheel off a 76-94 Silverado / K5 Blazer, S10 pickup. It was cheap and frankly the visibility is much better the original.
