When I bought the bike the owner, whom had owned the bike for a few months, said the previous owner had disconnected the automatic oil injection system meaning that fuel had to be premixed with oil. I don't know much about two strokes but I thought they all had to have oil added to the fuel so this didn't seem like a big issue at all.
Just in case I did some research on what could be wrong with the oil injection system (Suzuki calls it CCI). I learned that it is gear driven off the crank (in a round about way). I also learned that it injects oil into the cylinder and onto the crank bearings. Pre-mix fuel alone will not properly lubricate one of the crank bearings.
All this info, combined with the fact I didn't want to risk forgetting to add oil to to my gas, meant I would was going to try to fix the oil injector. I head out to the garage and removed the cover plate. Everything was there and in place with no obvious leaks or cracked lines. I decided to go ahead and reconnect the CCI pump to the oil reservoir and see if it worked. Thats when I finally found the problem, there was no oil reservoir!
My best guess as to what happened was that the oil reservoir, which is plastic, developed a leak. The previous previous owner must have just chucked it and started premixing fuel. The CCI pump itself was probably still good.
At least that was my theory as I dropped $30 on ebay getting a second hand oil reservoir. My theory was bolstered when I found that the mounting metal braket for the oil reservoir was broken in half. Someday I may order a new one of those too.
Anyways I hooked the pump up to the tank, ran the bike around the neighborhood and by the time I got back, oil had made it through the pump and out to the crank. There is still some air in the upper line that goes to the clyinder but I think it will bleed out on the next ride. Pictures
