rv - New Tires, Cooper Discovery AT3-LT

My existing BFGoodrich commerical tires had some cracking and two of them were well below the wear line. I had left them on the front too long without rotating. I opted to get Cooper Discovery AT3-LT tires. These support the load of the RV. They have a more aggresive off-road type tread. I actually drive my RV on plenty of dirt and gravel, with decent grades, including in the snow. Even though 98% of the time I am on a road, I will sacrafice some road manners for that 2% where I am in the middle of nowhere on unpaved roads.

Overall I am very pleased with the new Cooper tires. Here are my general impressions.

  • They are louder than the BFGoodrich tires, but even I struggle to hear the difference. The GMC motorhome is simply not a quiet vehicle. The tire noise difference is negligable
  • The new tires track straighter (no additional alighment was performed). This is a relief. The BFGoodrich tires always seemed to wander. The new tires are more likely to keep going straight.
  • The new tires have a more uniform steering response. You turn the wheel a little and you get a little turn. On the old tires, it felt like you got no turning until you got all of it.
  • Durability seems good. I drove 3700 miles immediately after the new tires. I lost 1 mm of tread depth on the rear tires and 2 mm on the fronts. That seems pretty great to me as these tires have a deep tread. I don't normally put that many miles on the RV so I will still likely replace these Cooper tires from age than wear.
  • Off road performance is good. I never struggled for traction during my recent road trip even as I drove on some gnarly (for an RV) rutted roads.
  • I can't comment on snow performance yet.
