rv - Day night window shades

The RV came with beige curtains with loops that slipped over horizontal metal tracks. They did block the light, but they made the inside of the RV feel unkept. With the curtains open, much of the window was still obscured. And they were all or nothing as far as light blocking.

We decided to with a cullular shade with both a day (sheer) and a night option. We got white fabric for the day portion and green for night.

These shades are not that hard to install provided you know what you are screwing into behind the wall. I had no idea until I removed the wall and got a look behind. In some cases, I had to add some support behind the wall for the blind clips to screw into.

My general impressions after having these things installed for a year.

  1. I do love the look. The shades are a clean line and the RV interior looks cleaner and nicer with them install vs the old curtains
  2. I also very much appreciate the day night mode. Both modes work as you would hope. Day cuts down on the sun while still allowing a view of outside. Night really does block the light for privacy or sleeping.
  3. They don't rattle around at all while driving down the road.
  4. They fit behind the upper wall cabinets without needing any extra depth. This was a huge time saver
  5. I do not like the specific brand we got. The day shade pleats often straighten out. Thus when you got to close the blinds, they don't fold nicely back together. You have to manually alignt each pleat. It is extremely annoying and time consuming.
    1. Perhaps a different brand would not have this issue
    2. Or ordering the blinds for a window at least another 6 inches taller might solve it. We gave them our window dimention as requested, but the length shade they provided is long enough to cover the window, but not without the pleats straightening out
  6. The night shades when fully extended to not straighten the pleats. They work like you would expect.
  7. This style of blind requires the string to the anchored at the bottom. It is very time consuming to get them mounted with just the right amount of tension on the lines so they open at all, don't just flop down when driving, and each side opens with uniform tension.
  8. Dimensionally all the shade sizes are perfect. I wouldn't change any of the blind sizes.
I am happy with how this type of blind looks and works. I am just not happy with the specific brand of blind due to the difficulty in getting the day time shades to fold up again nice from fully covering the window.
