The UTV was not making much power in forward gear. It wouldn't go over small rocks or through any snow. It wouldn't spin the tires trying, it simply wouldn't go forward. The kids drove the UTV in some snow and immediately got stuck. The confusing thing was that the the UTV would go fine in reverse. They were able to back out of the snow spinning the wheels the whole way, but not drive forward. I suspected all sorts of problems but it turns out the fix was simple. The clutch needed to be adjusted.

To adjust the clutch, you loosen the lock nut, then back out the adjusting screws until you feel resistence, then tight it back up a quarter turn, then tighten the lock nut again. After performing this procedure, the UTV starts moving forward much sooner when giving it throttle. It is able to drive forward through medium snow. So it is performing much better.

It is still not able to drive through deep snow. Same symptoms as before, it does not put enough power down to spin the tires. It still seems like the clutch is slipping, though not nearly as badly as before.

That may just be as good as it gets. Still, I don't know that I could take the kids on any serious uphill off road trails unless this thing will actually spin the tires in forward trying for traction.
