You really had to yank on the door handle from the outside to get the door to open. After living with it for a year I finally took the time to investigate. Turns out the door lock/lever assembly has a pivot point you can use to take up slack then tighten a screw. This allows you to adjust the movement on the door handle so it starts opening as soon as you open the handle. The screw had come loose. As a result, the handle was almost all the way out before it even started operating internal lever. I added some locktite and tightened the screw down again. Now the door is once again easy to open.
