I am an a-hole. I think I left fuel in the carbs 5 years ago when I last tried to get the bike running. That meant that when I got around to looking at the carbs I was greeted by a foul smell and this nasty goopy stuff that was about the consitency of molasis that was stuck inside my carbs. Luckily, one carb was actually pretty clean, the other was horrid. Luckily I recently purchased an ultrasonic cleaner for my xs1100 carbs. I dismantled the carbs, put them in the ultrasonic cleaner along with a very very hot carb cleaning solution and 20 minutes later, viola, they are beautiful and all channels are clean again.

I have to say, that ultrasonic cleaner was about $70 but was worth every penny. These carbs are ready to go back on the bike. This time though, I added a fuel filter and new fuel lines.
