The Bottom Line
I spent $825 to install my electronic fuel injection system, and another $150
to complete the GM DIS ignition system.
How's it running? I'm glad you asked ... FANTASTIC. It starts easy, runs great, pulls hard. Early reports show a remarkable improvement in my gas mileage, from 32 mpg to over 39 mpg running on Houston's 10% alcohol-gas mixture.
For the uninformed riders, in May '06, to meet EPA’s "Big City" pollution control regulations, Houston began adding alcohol to their gas. I'm sure it's cleaning up the air and it's definitely affecting performance. I lost 10% in fuel mileage with everything I drive, and it costs more. Something wrong with this model...I'm spending more money, to get less mpg's, to burn more fuel. But, there's good news ...
During the 2006 TeXSive motorcycle rally near Hondo Texas, I got 44 - 47 MPG on non-alcohol, 92 octane gasoline.
Rally Ride Report
In Oct. '06, I drove 260 miles over the Austin-San Antonio Hill Country. I
filled my tank three times (not counting the initial top-off). My first stop
was at 84 miles (2.276 gals. @ $2.469/gal, unleaded Super, they were out of
86 octane), then at 160 miles (1.515 gals. @ $2.599/gal, Exxon Supreme) and
finally at rides end, 260 miles (2.110 gals). If you do the math, that's 260
miles on 5.901 gallons, or 44.04 mpg. Using my last leg of the trip, which
was mostly flat terrain, I went 100 miles on 2.11 gals. That's 47.4
MPG.
Wow, speaks for itself; that's 15 more miles per gallon, or a 46.8% improvement.
